Designing for Biodiversity

Gardens play an important role in supporting biodiversity. Even small spaces can provide habitat for birds, bees and beneficial insects.

Layered planting — combining groundcovers, perennials, grasses and shrubs — creates shelter and food sources throughout the year. Leaving seed heads, fallen leaves and stems through winter supports overwintering insects and birds.

Biodiversity does not mean sacrificing beauty. In fact, gardens designed with ecological principles often feel richer and more alive.
