Choosing Plants for the Riverina
Plant choice is critical in regional NSW. While inspiration often comes from cooler or coastal gardens, not all plants are suited to the Riverina’s extremes.
We favour perennials and grasses that cope with heat, frost and periods of dryness. These plants are often deep-rooted, resilient, and able to recover quickly after stress. When planted in drifts and supported by healthy soil, they outperform more delicate choices.
Understanding what struggles is just as important. Plants that require constant moisture, shelter from heat, or intensive maintenance often fail to thrive here.
By selecting plants that are grown locally and tested in similar conditions, gardens establish faster and require less ongoing care.
